I make artwork as a way to explore ambiguity, storytelling, metamorphosis, spirituality, and ecological interdependency. I do not always combine these themes, but I often do.
For over 10 years, clay has been my preferred medium because it allows me to generate organic 3-dimensional forms and textures spontaneously. Organic forms and textures are essential components of my sculptures because I am interested in portraying metamorphic, biotic matter. Spontaneity is an important aspect of my art making process because it permits me to make creative decisions without rationalizing actions. Working in this loose manner helps me make ambiguous features.
When making a clay sculpture, I will often blur the distinction between representations of separate organisms and objects. I do this to poetically depict organisms and ecosystems undergoing metamorphosis. I enjoy insinuating connectedness and relatedness between disparate entities and qualities. I perceive kinship in all the expressions of Earth.
